In the last few centuries fly fishing has become very popular. It differs from the traditional fishing in the fact that it’s main purpose is not to catch fish for food purposes, it is more of a recreational activity. We can say that it is on the border to an art.

Fly fishing is very different from the regular fishing that most people do. With the regular fishing equipment you use different kinds of lures or live bait to attract the fish to your hook. In fly fishing on the other hand, you use small flies that are intended to trick the fish into believing that it is a real insect.

Most people know that fly fishing is all about making the flies look as much as natural insects as humanly possible. A lot of hours and effort is put into creating thee flies that look just the way the tier wants them to be. Some of the best tiers make their flies look so natural that i bet a good portion of the population can not tell the difference. Unless they see the small hook on the fake one..

For the same reason fly fishermen try to make their flies move in a way that looks as close to the real insects as possible. In river they try to make their flies follow the stream in a natural way.<br/>

In regular fishing you use your lure itself as weight to get it out to the fish. In fly fishing the line is your casting weight. There are some techniques that has been developed for this purpose.

The most common casting technique is the overhead cast. In this cast the fisherman throws the line back and forward and in the process releasing more and more line. When the required amount of line is out, it is released. Other much used throws are the spey cast and the snake roll.

When we talk about flies, we usually talk about 3 different things.

Dry flies: The fly that has probably been used for the longest time. This is a fly that float on the surface. They are meant to look very much like insects that is floating by. Dry fly fishing is by many considered the only way to fish with a fly.

Wet flies: A type of flies that are meant to swim below the water surface. As a rule you cannot say that a wet fly is trying to look like anything in particular.

Nymphs: Fishing under the surface. Trying to imitate hatching insects. Sometimes weighted so that they can get faster to the bottom. Many trout and charr fishermen only use nymphs.
